Quarterback Garrett Nussmeier setting new standard for LSU football in 2024

As we look ahead to the 2024 college football season, LSU football quarterback Garrett Nussmeier recently had some notable things to say, describing a big-time turn around in the mentality of this year’s version of the Tigers.

For the first time in his extended LSU football career, quarterback Garrett Nussmeier is heading into the new season as an assumed starter. Over the course of his three seasons with the Tigers, the Lake Charles, LA, product has just one start under his belt and has an opportunity to make quite a name for himself over the next year or so.

However, that’s not exactly where is focus is at as we look ahead to the 2024 season. He isn’t necessarily focused on individual accolades, but instead is more concerned about the team as a whole.

In his time donning the purple and gold, the most wins the former four-star class of 2021 recruit has seen in one season is stuck at 10, as the team has done these last two years under coach Brian Kelly.

Understandably, he has high hopes that this can change in 2024, and it appears as though the team shares a similar sentiment.

When speaking with Billy Embody and Shea Dixon of On3 earlier this week, there was no doubt in his mind about the current energy of the team thus far in the offseason.

“As an entire team, we feel like 10 wins is not good enough anymore,” the soon-to-be senior said when talking about the general vibe around the program. “I think we feel like we’ve done a good job buying into coach Kelly’s process and the way he wants things run, but we haven’t done an elite level job at it. And I think we’ve been good at it, and I think that’s what our record has shown. We’ve been good. We’ve had 10 win seasons, and we’ve been close. Right? We’ve been really close. We’ve made it to the SEC Championship. We’ve been close.

“Good is not good enough anymore, and it’s about being great in our daily chores and the daily things that we have to do, and that’s what has to take us to the next level. That’s how we build a championship team. That’s how we build championship chemistry.”

Over the course of his career, Nussmeier has thrown the ball 219 times for 1,720 yards and 11 touchdowns. Despite a majority of his work having come as a backup, it’s important to note that in his one game as a starter, he threw the ball 45 times for 395 yards and three touchdowns against Wisconsin in the 2024 ReliaQuest Bowl, playing a major part in securing the win for the Tigers.
