Legends of the Ring: Honoring Multi-Division Boxing Champions – From Filipino Excellence to Sugar Ray’s Brilliance

Many great boxers have graced this wonderful sport throughout the years – with some winning world titles in multiple weight divisions. At Big Fight Weekend, we have decided to pay homage to three of the greatest multi-division world champions in boxing history.

Three Multi Division Boxing Greats

Manny Pacquiao

Manny Pacquiao (62-8-2, 39 KOs) has defied all the doubters throughout his career, winning world titles in eight different weight classes ranging from flyweight to light middleweight. The Filipino legend is a rare breed of fighter who has shown an ability to move up and down in weight, which has seen him involved in many memorable fights.

He holds impressive wins against Ricky Hatton, Oscar De La Hoya and his memorable four fights against Juan Manuel Marquez, amongst many others, which saw “PacMan” also win lineal championships in five different weight divisions.

Roy Jones Jr

Roy Jones Jr. (66-9, 47 KOs) enjoyed a glittering career and was considered the original pound-for-pound star in boxing, which saw him win world titles in five different weight classes, from middleweight to heavyweight.

He recorded great wins against Bernard Hopkins and Virgil Hill in addition to his memorable win against John Ruiz. His fast hands, slick combinations and excellent lateral movement made him one of the greatest boxers.

Sugar Ray Robinson

Sugar Ray Robinson (173-19-6, 109 KOs) won world titles in the welterweight and middleweight divisions, wowing audiences with his brilliant one-punch KO power. He picked his punches well and had lightning footwork, which ensured he landed his punches and largely avoided attacks from his opponents. 

The Georgia-born fighter won his first title against Tommy Bell via unanimous decision before winning the middleweight title against Jake LaMotta on February 14, 1951. He is best known for his memorable 91-fight win streak between 1943 and 1951. Robinson will be remembered for his scintillating skills inside the ring and his flamboyancy outside the ring.
