Mike Clevinger Has Tough Debut as White Sox Stumble to 8-2 Loss vs. Rays

Mike Clevinger recorded just six outs in his 2024 season debut, and the Chicago White Sox lost 8-2 to the Tampa Bay Rays in Monday's series opener. Clevinger struggled with control, and an error in the second by Nicky Lopez helped the Rays put three runs on the board. Tommy Pham provided the South Siders' only offense with a two-run homer in the third.

Pham's homer cut the deficit to one run, but the Rays wasted no time expanding their lead. In the bottom half of the inning, Amed Rosario led off with a triple and scored on Harold Ramirez's single. Clevinger walked Jose Caballero in the next at-bat, ending his day. Ramirez went 4-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored.

"It's just his first outing, and again, it's tough to do what he did," White Sox manager Pedro Grifol said of Clevinger's debut. "Sign late, speed it up. I mean, there's a reason why there's a Spring Training, right? I just think he's in the building process."

When It Rains It Pours

The Rays DH doubled and scored in the fifth, ending a streak of 14.1 scoreless innings by White Sox relievers. Tampa Bay piled on when Jonny DeLuca blasted a two-run homer off Jared Shuster. The Rays added another run in the sixth when Tim Hill's errant throw allowed Ramirez to score from first base.

Lopez singled to lead off the fifth, accounting for the fourth and final hit of the game for the inept Pale Hose offense.

News and Notes

The White Sox placed reliever Dominic Leone on the injured list with lower back tightness. Clevinger replaced Leone on the active roster.

Recently called-up prospect Bryan Ramos made his second consecutive start and went 1-for-4 with a single.
