Stat highlights Steph Curry as lone Warrior on mediocre team

This is not to say Stephen Curry has a pedestrian supporting cast, but it's becoming increasingly evident that he's got lesser help than any of the nine teams seeded above his Warriors.

As Marcus Thompson II of The Athletic points out in a new article, a closer look at the West standings suggests that each of the playoff-bound teams has a pair of co-stars in their ranks. While Nikola Jokic and Shai Gilgeous Alexander's running mates — Jamal Murray and Jalen Williams, respectively — have yet to make All-Star teams, their night-to-night production warrants "co-star" status.

Thompson II argues the Warriors' former All-Stars — Klay Thompson, Chris Paul and Andrew Wiggins — are no longer producing like a reliable No. 2 option. And the 21-year-old Jonathan Kuminga, with all the untapped potential in the world, has yet to be truly unlocked. That's fair.

"In today’s NBA, you need another player with the gumption and ability to take over games, punish matchups and thrive off the superstar," Thompson writes. "This person has to be able to score and make plays — against good defense — in pressure moments. You can't be legit in today's NBA, which is all about potent offense, without it."

Curry truly stands alone.

If there was one stat to prove it, Automatic on X has shed light on the true shooting disparity between Curry and the rest of his teammates during clutch moments (final five minutes of a game).

Here are more telling numbers: in the fourth quarter, none of the Warriors besides Curry gets hot from deep, with Thompson shooting 30 percent, Kuminga 32, Wiggins 33 and Green 15. Paul shoots 40 percent but attempts less than one three in the fourth period.

The subpar fourth-quarter production has led to Golden State blowing 13 12-point leads this season. Steve Kerr's squad simply cannot close games.

Despite all those challenges, Curry has miraculously led the Warriors to a 19-18 record in games decided in clutch time. But the Warriors ought to get him some help next season.
