'I think people will really get a perfect idea of….,' Roger Federer explains what his documentary FEDERER: Twelve Final Days actually is about

Federer then revealed that it was Joe Sabia, the co-director, who told him to share the footage with the world. The tennis great said he agreed to use the footage for the documentary even though he initially was against showing them to the fans and kept it for himself, his kids, his friends, and his team.

I really started to feel that it's true that it'll be a pity if we don't share it with the fans, with people who maybe want to see, the glimpse behind the scenes of how actually hard it is to retire because we never really actually talked about it, we realize…all you remember is the person or the results or like you said the matches and here were are like seeing the very raw material being put together incredible nicely.  Roger Federer said in The Mad Dog Unleashed podcast

The Swiss maestro felt that sharing the footage would help the fans get the idea of how difficult it was for him to hang up his racket. 

In the beginning, I was really insecure, unsure if I should really release it or should put it out. I think it's very personal, and I think people will really get a perfect idea of how hard it actually was for me to retire in London.  Roger Federer added 

The documentary is directed by Asif Kapadia and Joe Sabia and is set to release on June 20.

Roger Federer last played in the Laver Cup

The documentary, FEDERER: Twelve Final Days will have the moments when Roger Federer played his last match at the 2022 Laver Cup. He teamed up with 22-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal, against whom Federer has played some of the most memorable matches in tennis history.

He played for Team Europe, which had tennis’ Big-4 (Federer, Nadal, Novak Djokovic, and Andy Murray). It was the first time these four players joined together as a team. 

In his final match alongside Nadal, Federer lost to the American pair of Jack Sock and Frances Tiafoe in three sets. Then Federer, 20 Grand Slam singles titles and a 1251–275 win-loss record later, finally retired.
